ADSL Central Filter Installation
If you have an ADSL internet connection and also wish to utilise the phone line, an ADSL filter is required. The ADSL filter eliminates static noises on the phone line caused by the modem. Without a filter, the static greatly impedes having a normal phone conversation. Devices such as fax machines also need a filter to operate.
There are two different types of ADSL filters. In-line filters that plug into the phone socket and central filters that are hard wired into the phone cabling. When using in-line filters, every phone point being utilised must have a filter connected. If a Central filter is installed, just the one is required.
There are benefits to having an ADSL central filter. In cases where the internal phone cabling may be contributing to slow download speeds or the internet connection is dropping out frequently, a central filter may rectify the problem. From an ascetic point of view, negating the need for in-line filters on every phone socket may be desirable, particularly in high visibility areas. Lastly the convenience of never needing to use an in-line filter to operate a device again.
In some situations, an ADSL central filter can be necessary. Devices such as monitored alarms and medical alert systems will not function reliably without an installed central filter. Some cordless phones may not have the static removed when using an in-line filter. If a phone line has four or more sockets, a central filter is highly recommended.
ADSL central filters can only be installed by a telecommunications technician with an ACMA license. Most service providers are unlikely to carry out this type of work. Typically, a private service company must be hired to install an ADSL central filter.
