TV Wall Mount Installation
Why Use a Professional Installer?
Wall mounting a television might seem like an easy task. Attach the TV bracket to the wall with a few screws and job done. Right? Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. A professional installer knows there are numerous factors to consider and potential hazards to negotiate along the way.
A TV bracket mounted on a plaster wall needs to be secured to the internal studs. But first you need to find them. You could try thumping on the wall and drilling a bunch of holes or let a professional with a stud finder locate their exact position. To ensure maximum strength, screws should be placed in the centre of the stud. A screw that is only partly embedded in the stud will not be as strong.
When drilling into plasterboard, you’re doing so completely blind. You need to be concerned with what might be inside the wall. Namely electrical wiring and water pipes. The contents of the wall should be checked before starting to drill. Remember, there are easier, more enjoyable ways to get a buzz then drilling into live mains power. Bad jokes aside, drilling into either of these is serious. The potential for damage and injury is very high. A professional has the equipment to locate and avoid them when drilling through plasterboard.
Not convinced you should use a professional installer? Here’s an anecdote regarding one of our customers. John rang us up requiring our help. He had purchased a cheap bracket online and installed it himself. Initially everything seemed to be fine but a few days later disaster struck. The TV bracket came away from the wall damaging the plasterboard. Fortunately, he got to the television before it fell. This situation was caused by two factors. Incorrectly mounting the TV bracket to the studs and using a TV bracket of poor quality and design. It was only dumb luck that the television was not destroyed as a result of this incident.
The takeaway from this story is a novice doesn’t have the necessary experience and knowledge. A professional would have looked at the TV bracket and known it was unsuitable for the job. A professional would have used the correct mounting hardware to ensure a secure connection to the wall. It’s knowing what to lookout for that separates amateur from expert. So, don’t be left disappointed from a botched DIY installation. Use a professional installer.
Can Your TV be Wall Mounted?
Most flat screen televisions have the provision for wall mounting. An easy way to check your television is to look on the back panel. You’ll be looking for four screw holes towards the middle forming a square or rectangular shape. You could also consult the television’s user manual. There should be a section on mounting the television and what’s required. Usually there’s a mention of VESA along with some numbers i.e. 400 x 400. These numbers represent the distance in mm between the screw holes.
Television manufacturers typically use the mounting standard by VESA. This allows usage of universal TV brackets rather than needing to use a manufacturer’s proprietary TV bracket. So, if your television has the mounting screw holes and uses the VESA standard, we can wall mount it for you.
TV Brackets
For customers who don’t have a TV bracket, we can supply one on the job. Our technicians carry a wide range to suit a variety of situations. Television size, wall type, obstructions, room layout and aesthetics are all considered when helping you choose the best TV bracket. For those who already own a TV bracket we can install that instead of supplying one.
There are two main types of TV brackets to decide on. The first type fixes the television in a static position. This is well suited to a room with a constant viewing location like a couch. The second type allows the television to move out from the wall and pivot side to side. This is great for odd-shaped rooms and affords an array of viewing angles. Usually it comes down to personal preference when deciding between these two. However in some cases, it may be necessary to use a specific type due to the layout of the room or the type of wall.
We have been using the same TV brackets for many years. Over this time, they have proven to be strong and durable. These are rather critical attributes when entrusting the safety of your television. There are some poorly constructed TV brackets on the market which may not hold your television very securely. Quality should be a crucial factor when choosing which TV bracket to purchase. Our brackets also comply with the VESA standard to ensure compatibility with the majority of televisions.

Concealed AV Cables
More than likely you’ll want to connect some other device to your television. It could be a DVD player, gaming console, sound bar etc. All of these require a cable connection, usually a HDMI lead. Cables that connect to a wall mounted television will be left hanging down and exposed. This can pose a hazard to small children who may pull on them. Hanging cables can also present an inviting target for pets to chew on. Apart from the safety concerns, the exposed cables can ruin the aesthetics of the room. Luckily, there is a solution.
Cables can be hidden away by running them inside the wall cavity. This involves installing a wall plate behind the TV and another wall plate further down the wall close to the skirting board. These plates provide access to the wall cavity to facilitate running the cables. Hiding cables in this way is only possible if the wall has a cavity.
Your existing AV cables may not be long enough to install inside the wall. Most standard cables are usually somewhere between one and two metres in length. We find that a minimum of three metres is required. If you don’t have the longer cables, we are able to supply them on the job. We carry the most commonly used cables in a variety of different lengths.
TV Points
A television isn’t much good without a connection to the TV antenna. Along with our wall mounting service, we can install new TV points behind the television. If you already have an existing TV point below the television, a long lead can be installed to connect the two.
