Reconnecting Phone Sockets
Few people are aware that their home phone will function differently after connecting to the NBN. Telephone handsets will now need to plug into the modem instead of a wall socket. This presents a problem if you want your telephone in a different location to your modem or wish to use multiple handsets.
Unfortunately, this is not something you can solve yourself. A technician is required. Even worse, your service provider is unlikely to help as the issue is internal. Luckily, we can help.
To fix this problem, some additional cabling needs to be installed. Assuming there’s easy access to run the cable, this type of job shouldn’t take very long. Once completed, you’ll be able to use your telephone handset on any of the existing phone sockets.

Moving the NBN Modem / Router
Chances are you’ll have little say about the location of the NBN connection box. Very often the technician who installs the cabling & hardware will choose the easiest option. It will likely be in a garage or at the front of the house. But what if that location doesn’t suit you? What if you want to place the modem / router elsewhere? Fortunately, there is a solution which will allow you to move the modem.
If you have FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) there are limitations on what can be moved. The internal NBN connection box will need to stay in place. However, we can change the location of the modem/router. We can run a data cable from the NBN connection box into a different room of the house. The modem then connects through that cable. Likewise, a phone cable run from the NBN connection box into a different room will provide a telephone connection.
If you have HFC (Hybrid Fibre Coaxial) there are fewer limitations. It is possible to move the NBN connection box. By installing a new coaxial wall socket, the connection box can be placed in a different room. The modem from your service provider can then plug into the NBN connection box. Another option is to leave the NBN connection box in its original location and run a data cable into another room location for the modem to connect to.

Setup and Install NBN Modem
Most internet service providers send you a modem / router when signing up. You’re then left to install it yourself. Installing the modem is “easy” when you know how. But what if you’re not “technical” enough to do so?
This is a fairly common problem. NBN modems are more complex compared to other broadband modems. It’s understandable to see why not everyone feels confident enough to install their modem.
Our technicians can help. They will ensure the modem is properly connected to the NBN service and test the internet connection. They can also connect your home phone to the modem and install any necessary telephone cabling.
So, if you’re struggling with the modem, don’t fret. Give us a call on 9705 1525 and we’ll get it sorted.
NBN Rollout and Availability in Cranbourne
The NBN rollout in Cranbourne is expected to be complete by June 2019. Once the service is available in your area, you’ll have approximately 18 months to switch over to the NBN. After this time, all the older services will be terminated. If you don’t switch, your phone and internet service will be disconnected.
There are two main types of NBN technologies in use throughout Cranbourne. The first is FTTP (Fibre to the Premises). This uses a fibre optic cable to connect the building to the outside service. A utility box is installed on the outside of the house and a connection box and power supply are installed inside. In theory, the fastest speeds possible are available from this type of service.
The second is HFC (Hybrid Fibre Coaxial). This uses a coaxial cable to connect the building to the NBN service. There will likely be a wall socket (like a TV point) at the front of the building which the connection box should be plugged into.
